We are an independent pet retailer, specialists in natural animal foods and stockist of Healthy Option Pet Food. We offer a full range of treats and accessories for dogs, cats, wild & exotic birds, poultry, small animals & fish.
Our experienced staff are always available to offer free nutritional advice, expert fitting of dog harnesses and collars and we also provide free weighing for your dog.
Our journey began in 1986, when Gary’s Pet Supplies first opened as a small stall on Skipton Market in North Yorkshire. The stall quickly became popular with local pet owners, and before long, we expanded to other nearby markets.
By 1991, the business had grown enough to move into our current home in Colne, Lancashire. With the move came a new name — Acorn Animal Feeds — and a wider range of branded pet foods and accessories.
Over the following decade, we discovered something important: even small changes to an animal’s diet can make a huge difference to their health and happiness. Inspired by this, we expanded into natural pet foods, launched our very own dog and cat food ranges, and rebranded as Healthy Option Pet Food Store.
As our reputation grew, so did our shop. We extended our premises to offer an even bigger selection of accessories and, with that, became Acorn’s Healthy Option Pet Food Store.
In 2019, there was a change of ownership and Karen continues to run the store today, staying true to our founding values.
In Karen’s words:
“My time at Acorn’s Pet Food Store has seen a number of highs and lows, but we always strive to uphold the principles and passion established throughout our history. Our philosophy remains unchanged – to provide quality products at competitive prices and with the best customer service.”
I swapped 25 years in the pharmaceutical world for the much fluffier side of life when I joined Acorns in 2019. These days I know more about animal health and nutrition than most pets know about themselves—knowledge that comes in very handy when working in the pet industry!
Born and bred in Burnley, I’m a proud Clarets fan (yes, it’s character building). I’m also hooked on F1, which is basically cars going around in circles at 200mph—what’s not to love?
Back in the day, I played all sorts of sports, but now I’ve upgraded to gentler pursuits: strolling through the countryside, wandering beaches, and living my best life in a camper van whenever I can sneak away.
If I were an animal, I’d be a fox—wise, wily, and occasionally found sniffing around campsites.
I joined Acorn’s in 2011 and have been part of the team ever since. Animals have been at the heart of my career from the moment I left school (which now feels like several lifetimes ago!).
The most rewarding part of my role is hearing from customers about the positive results they’ve achieved through our nutritional advice — it’s always a joy to know we’ve helped make a difference.
Outside of work, I love spending time in the great outdoors. Whether I’m exploring new places on foot or enjoying the peace and quiet of campervan life, I’m happiest surrounded by fresh air, open skies, and the occasional cup of tea brewed somewhere scenic.
If I were an animal, I’d be a parrot in the jungle — soaking up the warmth, sunshine, and a little bit of tranquillity.
I’ve been at Acorns since June 2021, and honestly, it’s the perfect job for someone who basically runs a small zoo at home. At the moment I’ve got two dogs, a ferret, and two horses… but over the years I’ve collected (and cared for!) bearded dragons, geckos, snakes, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, rats, and cats.
Basically, if it eats, squeaks, slithers, or sheds, I’ve probably had one. Outside of work, you’ll usually find me rocking out at concerts, or galloping around with my horses like a low budget Billy the Kid.
In the store, I’m hard to miss — I’m the small, tattooed blur darting around like a spaniel and a ball. But don’t let the look fool you; underneath the chaos, I actually know my stuff when it comes to training and nutrition.
If I was an animal, I’d be a ferret: unhinged, probably in your cupboards, and still somehow your favourite.
I joined Acorn’s in April 2025 and have been happily adventuring here ever since. Outside of work, I’m all about exploring the world—whether that means discovering new places, diving into different cultures, or occasionally getting “creatively lost” along the way.
If I had to pick an animal that sums me up, it’d be the red panda. They’re calm, gentle, and have the kind of face that makes you instantly happier. Honestly, they’re just fluffy little mood boosters—and I like to think I bring a bit of that same energy wherever I go.
I began working at Acorn’s in April 2025, so I’m the newbie and the youngest in the shop. When I’m not working, you’ll find me out on my little farm, chasing goats, chickens and ducks around or trying to stop my 2 little dogs from chasing them.
If I were an animal, I would definitely be a dog – because let’s be honest what’s better than sleeping all day, being fed, and getting taken for walks?
Luna — Senior Supervisor (and Shop Queen)
I’m Luna, the true original of the shop and, at 14 years young, I’ve earned my crown as Senior Supervisor. My days are dedicated to life’s finer things: eating, sleeping, and reminding everyone (especially dogs) that I am the boss around here.
Don’t be fooled by my calm exterior — I still have plenty of sass and a sharp eye for keeping everything in order. While Tigger may boast about his so-called “mouse-catching record,” everyone knows who set the standard first.
Tigger — Chief Mouse Catcher (and Resident Charmer)
I’m Tigger, the handsome ginger beast you’ll usually spot stretched out in the comfiest corner of the shop. I’ve proudly held the title of Chief Mouse Catcher since 2016, and let me tell you — not a single mouse has dared show its whiskers since I took charge (don’t listen to Luna if she tries to claim otherwise).
When I’m not on patrol, you’ll catch me “quality testing” the beds (apparently my fur makes that a problem — rude, right?), sneaking the occasional treat, and, of course, turning on the charm with our lovely customers. My specialty? Wrapping myself around shoulders for maximum cuddle impact.
